Humour in things
Among
selected cartoonists of Nepal there are few who
work hand-in-hand with journalists and do almost
what a journalist does, among these, Abin has
made his own niche. His dedication has made it
possible for him to become the first cartoonist
of Nepal to hold a solo exhibition.
Abin recently his first book of cartoons "Abin's
Cartoon Collection Vol 1". It has over a
hundred cartoons. At a time when "Cartooning
in Nepal still has to struggle for its existence
as a separate entity", as Prof. Ram Kumar
Pandey puts it, making cartooning a profession
is tough and publishing a hard cover book, which
has only cartoons to go through could be more
than a challenge. Still, 33-year-old Abin done
it.
His bold lines look easy but meaningful facial
expressions and the typical costumes of the characters
distinguish his cartoons. His knowledge of perspective
and foreground-background establishment, which
most tend to over look, also makes his works pleasant
to the eyes. The usual cityscapes with some traditional
tile houses, tall buildings and pagoda temples
add colour. Most of the steets make you feel like
you have been there.
On themes, Abin has the usual choices тАУ political
issues, corruption, party clashes, undue appointments,
water crisis, pollution, education, tourism, nurshing
homes, child labour, cultural heritage, garbage
problem, sport and almost every thing under the
Nepali sky. They are timeless, and look quite
relevant to today's situation even.
This book meets the needs of all kinds of readers-
from children to political analysts. With humour,
the book provides enlightening knowledge of the
deep-rooted problems.
